Enjoy this winter, free from back pain!

The first snowfall of the season is always special. Go out there and enjoy it. But remember, whether you take a brisk walk or get super active on the side of a mountain, it’s important to be well-prepared and smart.

Year after year patients come to our Toronto back pain clinic with serious back pain or neck pain because they’ve strained or injured themselves. Icy stairs and walkways are the cause of serious painful falls. Snow shoveling is more strenuous than many people realize and can directly contribute to a painful back injury. Skiing, skating, snowboarding…. you get the idea.

No one wants to be sidelined with a bulging or herniated disc. Many folks stay homebound in winter for fear of aggravating a chronic painful condition.

Here is some well-known winter advice that’s always worth repeating.

Shoveling:

• Each shovelful can weight 5-7 pounds! When you clear your driveway and walk, you could be moving several hundred pounds. Don’t let the snow pile up. Shovel frequently so that you move smaller amounts of snow each time.
• Use a lightweight pusher-type shovel. If you have a metal shovel, spray it with Teflon first to prevent snow from sticking to it.
• Push the snow to the side, rather than lifting and throwing it. If you do have to lift the snow, bend at the knees and use your leg and arm muscles. Keep you back straight.
• Take breaks often, especially if you feel chest pain or back pain.

Fun in the snow:

• Dress with layers. Layered clothing is best for keeping muscles warm and skin dry.  It’s worth investing in clothing specially developed for winter outdoor activity.
• Know when to rest. As with any exercise/activity, rest when you’re tired. Stop if you feel pain. Warm up and cool down with stretches.
• Stay hydrated. Cool temperatures can be deceiving and you may not realize you are thirsty. An active body needs fluids. Drink water or juice before, during and after winter sports.

This has been an amazing year for Back Clinics of Canada! Here are a few reasons why.

January: We moved into our new, state-of-the-art, world-class back pain and neck pain clinic in Vaughan. This was a long-time dream fulfilled. The new location, just off Highway 400, makes us more accessible than ever. In this spacious contemporary clinic we provide highly successful, non-invasive, comfortable back and neck pain care.
